Business needs are changing quickly and, as a result, work and the workforce must evolve. Some companies are rapidly hiring temporary employees. Others are looking to snag highly skilled talent for permanent positions. Tech hiring is still going strong; learn more here.
Online recruitment software and virtual hiring tools are helping employers more efficiently connect with candidates during this time. Job seekers should be prepared to embrace texting and live chat, video interviews, and even remote onboarding as part of their hiring process.
There has also been an increase in grassroots talent exchange programs, like iCIMS’ Connecting Customers hiring site, aimed at connecting recently furloughed or laid-off workers with new opportunities. These initiatives are helping to fill critical roles that are in high demand while also supporting workers in need.
For those seeking employment, here are just a few of the current job openings.
The health care industry is facing critical workforce needs, from hospitals looking for frontline workers, to pharmacies in need of store associates, to medical equipment suppliers hiring manufacturing help. GE Healthcare is increasing equipment output and needs to hire additional manufacturing employees to support the demand. CVS Health is planning to hire 50,000 store workers, delivery drivers, distribution center workers, and customer service employees.
Grocery stores across the nation are experiencing an unprecedented rise in hiring. Southeastern Grocers, owner of BI-LO, Fresco y Más, Harveys Supermarket, and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, is hiring more than 5,000 temporary workers. Supermarket chain Wegmans announced it is hiring more than five hundred associates for its New Jersey markets, Florida-based Publix, as well as 7-Eleven, Wawa, and other convenience stores, are also hiring in the thousands.
Food and grocery delivery services like Blue Apron and Instacart are seeing a huge surge in use due to stay-at-home orders and are seeking hundreds of thousands of workers to meet the demand for shoppers. Pizza chains including Papa Johns, Pizza Hut and Domino’s are also looking for delivery drivers, pizza makers, and customer service representatives to help meet demand.
Rural lifestyle retailer Tractor Supply Co. announced it is hiring 5,000 full-time and part-time workers nationwide. Openings include in-store team members, management, and team members in its Customer Solutions Center. Home improvement stores Home Depot, Lowes, and Ace Hardware are also increasing their hiring.
Walmart is looking to hire 150,000 temporary employees by the end of May. These associates will work in its stores, clubs, distribution centers, and fulfillment centers and many positions will convert to permanent roles. Dollar General is increasing its hiring efforts, too. The retailer plans to add up to 50,000 employees to its workforce by the end of April.
And, Amazon recently announced it is continuing to increase its workforce. The retail giant is looking for another 75,000 new employees in addition to the 100,000 employees it already hired.
Job seekers shouldn’t despair if these positions are not a match for them; many employers are also building their talent pipelines for the future. Now is a good time for job seekers to join talent pools, so that they can stay up to date with company news and be the first to know when jobs open up.
