As the holiday season draws near, many retail companies will be ramping up their hiring for the busiest season of the year. The National Retail Federation (NRF) expects retail sales in November and December (excluding autos, gas, and restaurants) to increase 3.6 percent from 2015 to $655.8 billion. Additionally, the reported retailers are expected to hire between 640,000 and 690,000 seasonal workers this holiday season.
This aligns with iCIMS’ findings from our survey of hiring managers in the retail industry, as almost half of employers say they will increase hiring – 48 percent of retail hiring managers plan to hire more seasonal workers this year than in 2015.
With hiring ramping up for the holidays, recruiters and hiring managers need the right technology to hire quickly and effectively. According to hiring managers in the retail industry, the top five tools that would be most effective to help hire temporary employees this holiday season include:
· 47 percent a mobile job application for employees
· 46 percent a mobile app for hiring managers, such as one to view pending tasks remotely
· 32 percent an online interview scheduling system that syncs with major email or calendar applications
· 27 percent recruitment marketing software, such as a tool to send automated emails or social media posts
· 21 percent video interviewing or video cover letter software
Finding best-fit talent is essential to a successful season. Hiring managers will need to keep their talent pools full throughout the holiday season as they experience significant turnover among temporary help. Hiring managers reported that on average 15 percent of these temporary hires do not work through the end of the holidays. Of those who do not make it to the end, 52 percent were fired and 48 percent quit.
How to get started with a future-focused seasonal recruiting strategy?
Adopt a mobile-responsive design. Make your open jobs and application process accessible to users on any device and allow candidates to upload resumes/documents from their Google Drive or Dropbox accounts.
Implement an ATS with a mobile app for hiring managers. A mobile application makes it faster and easier for hiring managers to hire great candidates for open jobs with on-the-go convenience for accessing the information they need about their open jobs and candidates from their smart phone.
Incorporate video in your recruitment strategy. Hiring managers need to make quick decisions to fill open roles for the busy holiday season. In fact, 86 percent said they can usually tell if they want to hire a temporary seasonal employee within one minute of starting the interview. Rather than wasting the extra time, money, and effort to schedule a phone screen or conduct an onsite interview, video can be used to quickly identify good-fit talent based on their displayed creativity, professional presentation, communication skills, and passion your company needs to success.
