When COVID-19 shut down the travel industry and grounded 95% of Hertz’s fleet, the global car rental giant used iCIMS Insights reports to respond and rebuild with innovation following massive layoffs and bankruptcy.

“For us to rebuild, we had to take that data and do a little something different,” said Hertz’s Vice President of HR. “We’re a face-to-face company and keeping our workforce in our corporate building was really big for our success story.”

To start, Hertz’s talent team used iCIMS Insights and its own compensation data to ensure that pay was equal in markets across the country to keep frontline in-person roles filled. The team also looked at worker availability numbers and discovered that part-time workers were interested in more flexible scheduling.   

Digging deeper, the team found that standard 12-hour shifts at airport locations had become an obstacle for candidates and employees who had dependents at home to care for during the pandemic. Posting “pick your own” schedules helped fill those open positions and increased retention.

“iCIMS Insights data helped validate what we were seeing with our candidate pool, with many openings but not enough applicants,” said Hertz’s Vice President of HR. 

 Hertz’s field operations team also uses Insights data in its workforce planning to help forecast future needs. Before posting open roles, the team now incorporates how long it takes a new employee to complete training and become fully functional in a position.
